D for Dalhousie

Sunset in Dalhousie
Dalhousie will always have a special place in my heart because it bestowed on me the gift of snow (my life's first). It was the first stop of the holiday Az and I took on the eve of our first wedding anniversary.

Dalhousie is a hill station in Himachal Pradesh, established in 1854 by the British Empire in India as a summer retreat for its troops and bureaucrats. The Dalhousie Town was named after Lord Dalhousie who was the British Governor-General in India while establishing this place as a summer retreat. It is built on and around five hills, Kathalagh, Potreyn, Terah, Bakrota and Bhangora. Located on the western edge of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas, it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Dalhousie is situated between 6,000 and 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above sea level.

We visited Dalhousie in the first week of November last year. Dalhousie is a small town with small population. It was not crowded at all and very peaceful. It usually starts to snow in Dalhousie in the last days of November. As we were visiting in the first week of the month, it was very unlikely for us to witness snow. But I wished real hard for snow as I had never seen snow in my life. The weather was foggy , then sunny and then suddenly it started to rain. All in a matter of a couple of hours. And to our pleasant surprise, rainfall transformed into snowfall. My excitement knew no bounds. It was the first snowfall of the season. And I mouthed a silent thank you to the Almighty.

If you happen to visit Dalhousie, do grab a bite in Bon Appetite and a cup of coffee in Monga's Cafe.

You can read more about my trip in my post "To The Hills and Back" .

I am taking part in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge [April 2014].
